Panoptikon Renk Çemberi, İngiliz filozof Jeremy Bentham’ın idealize ettiği Panoptikon adlı model üzerine inşa edilmiştir. Panoptikon, çok sayıda insanı gözetim altında tutmayı amaçlayan bir hapishanenin mimari modelidir. Bu model, tek odacıklı hücrelerden oluşan bir halka şeklinde yapılandırılmıştır. Ringin ortasında 360 derecelik açıyla gözlemcinin bulunduğu bir gözetleme kulesi bulunur. Fransız filozof Michel Foucault’ya göre bu model, modern toplumun okullar, hastaneler, hapishaneler, fabrikalar vb. birçok temel kurumunun işleyiş mantığını oluşturur ve insan düşüncelerini sistematik olarak tanımlayarak şekillendirir.

 

Bu yapıt, Foucault’nun düşüncelerinden hareketle sanatın temel eğitiminden başlayarak sanatçı üretiminin tek tipleşmesi, yapılandırılmış ve uyulması beklenen sistem içerisinde mahkumlaşması, gözetim altında dış taleplerle şekillendirerek yönetilmesi ve yönlendirilmesini eleştirir.

PANOPTICON COLOR WHEEL

Panopticon Color Wheel is built on the model named Panopticon idealized by the British philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Panopticon is an architectural model of a prison which aimed at keeping large numbers of people under surveillance. This model is structured in a ring of single-chamber cells. In the middle of the ring, there is a watch tower with the observer at an angle of 360 degrees. According to French philosopher Michel Foucault, this model constitutes the functioning logic of many basic institutions of modern society such as schools, hospitals, prisons, factories, etc., and shapes human thoughts by systematically identifying them.

This artwork is inspired by Foucault’s ideas. It criticizes how artistic production becomes standardized, starting from fundamentals of art education. It points out how artists are trapped in a structured system they are expected to follow. It also questions how their work is controlled and shaped by external demands under constant surveillance.
